The Creative Mindset: How to Thrive in a Creative Job

If you're like most people, you probably think of a creative job as one that is fun and exciting. And while it is true that these jobs can be a lot of fun, they also require a different mindset than a typical 9-5 job. When you have a creative job, your work revolves around creating something out of nothing. This can be challenging at times, but it's also very rewarding. In this blog post, I'll discuss what it takes to thrive in a creative job.

The Benefits of a Creative Job

One of the great things about having a creative job is that you get to express yourself through your work which might be writing, drawing, acting, dancing, singing or playing an instrument (just to name a few). There are so many types of creative jobs. These jobs can be a great way to connect with other people and make them feel something. It's also a lot of fun! Another benefit of a creative job is that you often have a lot of freedom in how you do your work. This means you often get to set your own hours and guidelines for how you do your work.

The Challenges of a Creative Job

Of course, with great freedom comes great responsibility. When you have a creative job, it's up to you to come up with new ideas and make them into something amazing. This can be tough at times, but it's also what makes these jobs so rewarding. Another challenge of a creative job is that you often have to work long hours on a single project. This is because it can take a lot of time to create something from scratch.

What It Takes to Thrive in a Creative Job

If you're thinking about pursuing a career in the arts, or if you already have a creative job, here are a few things you need to thrive:

Passion: This is probably the most important thing. If you're not passionate about your work, it will be very difficult to stay motivated.

Discipline: Even though creative jobs often involve a lot of freedom, you still need to be disciplined in how you approach your work. This means having a regular schedule and sticking to it.

Creativity: Obviously, you need to be creative to do well in a creative job! But there's more to it than that. You also need to be open-minded and willing to try new things such as collaborating with other artists in your field.

Persistence: Pursuing a creative career can be very challenging. There will be times when you feel like giving up. But if you're persistent, you'll eventually find success.

Tips for Success in a Creative Job

To succeed in a creative job, it can be helpful to find someone who is already successful in the creative field you're interested in. They can give you advice and help you avoid making mistakes.

Networking can also help you succeed at your job, especially if you are self-employed and having to market yourself. Get out there and meet people who are doing what you want to do. Attend events, join groups, and make connections.

Work on your mindset. I'm a writer and an illustrator and I find I work my best when my mindset is strong and healthy. In 2021, I wrote ten books, and I believe the major reason for that was my mindset. I believe so much in a healthy mindset and how it can do wonders for creatives and their work that I created Cards for Creatives.

Cards for Creatives

Cards for Creatives is an eclectic mix of my artwork and helpful affirmations for people who work in creative careers. As part of this post you'll see some of my favourite cards from the deck. These are affirmations I use all the time. Using affirmation cards is fun and easy. Choose an affirmation you want to work with, or pull a card randomly from the deck for inspiration.
