How to Have a Prosperous 2020

Did you know that New Year's resolutions regarding personal finances are some of the most common resolutions people make? Not only that, but by this point in the year many people have already given up on their resolutions.

It’s never too late to try again! You don’t need a new year to try something new. Here are a few things I did in 2019 that made a big difference in my personal finances.

Reflect and Forget

Consider what went well in 2019 and what didn't go so well. Keep the good then forget about the rest. Hanging onto financial mistakes you've made not only feels bad, but it can also lead to similar mistakes in the future. It's best to focus on what you did well when it comes to your finances then find a way to do more of that.

Adjust Your Mindset

I'm sure you've heard that quote by Henry Ford that goes something like whether you think you can or you can't, you're right. The more you dwell on not being able to earn more money, pay down your debt, or save more, the more you won't be able to do those things. Instead, imagine all the opportunities coming your way in 2020 and work to make those a reality.

Pay Attention

If you want your personal finances to improve, you need to pay attention to what's going on with your bank account and your credit cards. Tracking your income and expenses can go a long way to shedding some light on what's really going on with your finances.

It's important to also plan for future expenditures so you have the money when your payments are due.

Think Outside the Box

If bringing in more money is one of your goals in 2020, and you've tried traditional methods such as getting a higher-paying job or asking for a raise, it might be time to think outside the box. Sometimes improving your finances involves a bit of creativity. Could you start a side business doing something you love? Or sell some stuff you no longer use?

Celebrate Your Wins

Celebrating your wins may seem anti-productive when you're trying to save money, but your rewards don't have to cost a thing. Reward yourself with something you love to do like reading a book or taking a hot bath. There are also plenty of rewards that cost very little like a new pen or notebook. (Please tell me I'm not alone in my office-supply obsession!)

If you need a little guidance in the area of personal finance, I'm happy to share that I've created Prosperity Planner. It’s an undated planner that includes income and expense tracking to help you get clear on where your money is going. Once you're clear on how you're spending your money, it's much easier to make changes.

You’ll also find weekly layouts with an inspirational quote or affirmation to keep you thinking positively about your financial situation. The Prosperity Planner is now available on Amazon and other major retailers. You can also find a pdf version suitable for printing on 8.5” by 11” paper over on my website.

I have no doubt you can make 2020 your most prosperous year yet!
